The following are some of the important tests conducted on concrete:

1. Slump test.
2. Compaction factor test.
3. Crushing strength test.
1. Slump Test:
This test is conducted to determine the workability of concrete. It needs a slump
cone for test  Slump cone is a vessel in the shape of a frustum of a cone with diameter at bottom 200mm and 50mm at top and 300 mm high. This cone is kept over a impervious platform and is filled with concrete in four layers. Each layer is tamped with a 16 mm pointed rod for 25 times. After filling completely the cone is gently pulled up. The decrease in the height of the concrete is called slump. Higher the slump, more workable is the concrete.

2. Compaction Factor Test:
This is another test to identify the workability of concrete. This test is conducted in the laboratory. The test equipment consists of two hoppers and a cylinder fixed to a stand, the dimensions and the distances between the three vessels being standardized.
Vessel A and B are having hinged bottoms whereas cylinder C is having fixed bottom. Top vessel A is filled with the concrete to be tested. As soon as it is filled, the hinged door is opened. Concrete is collected in vessel B. Then the hinged door of B is opened to collect concrete in cylinder C. The concrete in cylinder C is weighted.
Let it be W1.Now cylinder is again filled with the sample of concrete in 50 mm layers, which is compacted by ramming and vibrating. Then the weight of compacted concrete is determined. Let this weight be W2. The ratio W1/W2 is termed as compaction factor.

3. Crushing Strength Test: Metallic moulds of size 150 mm × 150 mm × 150 mm are used for
casting concrete cubes. Before filling mould, it is properly oiled on its inner surfaces, so that cubes can be easily separated. Fresh cube is filled with concrete to be tested in 3 layers and kept in the room. After 24 hours, cube is removed from the mould and kept under water for curing.
 After 28 days of curing cubes are tested in the compression testing machine. In this test cubes are placed over the smooth surface which is in contact with side plates of mould. The crushing load is noted and crushing strength is found as load divided by surface area (150 × 150 mm2).
Code specify the desirable strength of concrete for 3 days and 7 days for quick assessment of strength of concrete.Desirable Properties of Concrete Appropriate quality and quantity of cement, fine aggregate, coarse aggregate and water should be used so that the green concrete has the following properties:
(a) Desired workability
(b) No segregation in transporting and placing
(c) No bleeding and
(d) No harshness.

Hardened concrete should have
(a) required characteristic strength
(b) minimum dimensional changes
(c) good durability
(d) impermeable
(e) good resistance to wear and tear.

👉External loads on a structure may be classified in several different ways. In one classification, they may be considered as static or dynamic.

🔵  Static loads are forces that are applied slowly and then remain nearly constant.

-One example is the weight, or dead load, of a floor or roof system.
🔵  Dynamic loads vary with time. They include repeated and impact loads.

🟠   Repeated loads are forces that are applied a number of times, causing a variation in the magnitude, and sometimes also in the sense, of the internal forces. A good example is an off-balance motor.

🟠 Impact loads are forces that require a structure or its components to absorb energy in a short interval of time. An example is the dropping of a heavy weight on a floor slab, or the shock wave from an explosion striking the walls and roof of a building.

🟠    External forces may also be classified as distributed and concentrated.

🟠   Uniformly distributed loads are forces that are, or for practical purposes may be considered, constant over a surface area of the supporting member. Dead weight of a rolled-steel I beam is a good example.

🟠  Concentrated loads are forces that have such a small contact area as to be negligible compared with the entire surface area of the supporting member. A beam supported on a girder, for example, may be considered, for all practical purposes, a concentrated load on the girder.

🟠   Another common classification for external forces labels them axial, eccentric, and torsional.

🟠 An axial load is a force whose resultant passes through the centroid of a section under consideration and is perpendicular to the plane of the section.

🟠 An eccentric load is a force perpendicular to the plane of the section under consideration but not passing through the centroid of the section, thus bending the supporting member.

🔵 Torsional loads are forces that are offset from the shear center of the section under consideration and are inclined to or in the plane of the section, thus twisting the supporting member.

🟠Also, building codes classify loads in accordance with the nature of the source.

🔵Dead loads include materials, equipment, constructions, or other elements of weight supported in, on, or by a building, including its own weight, that are intended to remain permanently in place.
🔵 Live loads include all occupants, materials, equipment, constructions, or other elements of weight supported in, on, or by a building and that will or are likely to be moved or relocated during the expected life of the building.

🔵Impact loads are a fraction of the live loads used to account for additional stresses and deflections resulting from movement of the live loads.

🔵  Wind loads are maximum forces that may be applied to a building by wind in a mean recurrence interval, or a set of forces that will produce equivalent stresses.

🔵Snow loads are maximum forces that may be applied by snow accumulation in a mean recurrence interval.

🔵 Seismic loads are forces that produce maximum stresses or deformations in a building during an earthquake.

👉 Raft Foundation: A raft or mat is a combined footing that 
covers the entire area beneath a structure and supports all the

🔸 Pile foundation may be defined as a  column support type of a foundation, which may be cast in-situ or  Pre-cast.

🔸 Classification of pile based on the function

👉 Bearing piles - Penetrate through soft soil and their  bottom rest on a hard stratum.
 
👉 Friction piles - The frictional resistance is equal to load  coming on the piles

👉 Screw piles -Used for gravely ground sand, mixed gravel  ground

👉 Uplift piles - when the structure subjected to uplift 
pressure.

👉 Batter pile – To resist large horizontal or inclined forces

👉 Sheet pile -used as bulk heads or a impervious cutoff

🔸 Classification of pile based on materials and composition

👉 Cement concrete piles : Posses excellent compressive strength.
 
1) Precast

2) Cast-in-site 

3) Under reamed piles

👉 Timber piles - Small bearing capacity, not suitable for hard soil and economical
 
👉 Steel piles - With stand impact stresses and resist lateral 
forces

👉 Sand piles - Not suitable for loose or wet soils or where is  a danger of scour. Easy to construct and irrespective of  water table. 

👉 Composite piles - combination of two different materials are used to form composite file and suitable where the upper part of pile to project above the water table.

1.All the points on a contour line have the same elevation.

👉 Aquifer is the saturated formation which not only stores water but also yield sufficient quantity.

👉 Ex. Unconsolidated deposits of sand &gravel forms aquifer

🔸 Aquitard

👉 Aquitard is the saturated formation through which only seepage is possible but it's yield is insufficient. It is partly permeable in nature.

👉 Ex:-Sandy-clay unit.

🔸 Aquiclude

👉 It is geological formation which is essentially impermeable to the flow of water.

👉 Ex:- Clay.

🔸 Aquifuge

👉 It is geological formation which neither contains water nor transmits through it.

👉 Ex:- Massive compacted rock without fractures.

1. Unconfined aquifer : Also known as water table aquifer.

2. Confined aquifer (Artesian aquifer) : An aquifer confined between two impervious beds such as aquicludes or aquifuge.

🔸 The discharge per unit drawdown at a well known as specific capacity

🔸 The unit of intrinsic permeability is Sq.cm

🔸 Storage coefficient (S) is dimensionless

🔸 Specific yield (Sy) + Specific retention (Sr) = Porosity

🔸 For open wells the ratio of safe depression head to critical depression head is 1/3

🔸 The ratio of water level change to atmospheric pressure head is called barometric efficiency.

💡Partial Safety Factor for Concrete (i.e 1.5) is more than that of Steel (1.15) because the control on Quality of Concrete is not good as that of Steel.

💡Deflection can be reduced by providing more Tensile Steel than required for Flexure,the service stress in steel is reduced & Hence the Deflection.

💡Shrinkage Deflection in case of Rectangular Beams & Slabs can be eliminated by putting Compression Steel equal to Tension Steel.

💡Negative moment in Reinforced concrete beams at the location of support is generally much higher than positive span moment.This is Primarily due to Curvature at the Support being very high....

💡If beam is Over-Reinforced,
the beam will not have Ductile Failure.
