⚡ Why DCDB & ACDB Are Mandatory in Solar Power Plant Installation? (With Technical Rating Calculations)
In every professionally engineered solar PV system — whether rooftop or ground-mounted — DCDB (Direct Current Distribution Box) and ACDB (Alternating Current Distribution Box) are not optional accessories. They are critical protection and power management components.
Ignoring proper DCDB & ACDB sizing can result in:

๐ Purpose:
DCDB is installed between the solar PV array and inverter. It provides:

➤ Step 1: String Voltage

Add 20% safety margin (as per IEC 62548):
495 × 1.2 = 594V
✅ Select DCDB voltage rating = 1000V DC
➤ Step 2: String Current
I_{string} = 13.5A
Add 25% safety factor:
13.5 × 1.25 = 16.8A
✅ Select DC MCB = 20A DC rated
If 2 strings parallel:
Total Current = 13.5 × 2 = 27A
With safety factor:
27 × 1.25 = 33.75A
✅ Select 40A DC output MCB
➤ SPD Rating Selection
• SPD voltage rating ≥ system voltage (1000V DC)
• Type II SPD for rooftop
• Type I+II if lightning-prone zone

๐ Purpose:
Installed between inverter output and main distribution board.
It provides:
• Inverter output protection
• Overcurrent protection
• Short circuit protection
• Grid isolation
• Surge protection

Assume:
• 10 kW Three-phase inverter
• Output voltage = 415V
• Power factor = 1
➤ Step 1: Output Current Calculation
I = P/{sqrt{3} × V}
I = 10000/{1.732 × 415}
I = 13.9A
Add 25% safety factor:
13.9 × 1.25 = 17.4A
✅ Select 25A 4P MCCB/MCB
➤ SPD Selection (AC Side)
• 3P+N Type II SPD
• Voltage rating 415V
• Discharge capacity ≥ 20kA
